Substitute Salary Schedule
Substitute Bus Drivers are limited to working 600 hours per school year.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Valid Washington State driver’s license for a minimum of five years.
- A commercial driver’s license. Class A or B with passenger endorsement, school bus endorsement, and airbrake restriction removed.
- Must have a current Washington State School Bus Driver’s Authorization from OSPI.
- Must meet all physical and character standards as established in WAC 392-144- including not having three or more speeding tickets in the last five years.
- Must possess a valid First Aid Card.
- Regular attendance and punctuality required.
- Be able to pass all drug & alcohol test as required by D.O.T. and MLSD policy.
- Be able pass and continue to pass a CDL physical.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the board may find acceptable.
WAC 392 144 Requirements. Every authorized school bus driver must meet the following initial requirements:
- Have at least five years of experience as a licensed driver of a passenger vehicle.
- Submit to a criminal record check according to chapter 400 RCW which shows that no offenses have been committed which would be grounds for disqualification of an authorization as listed in WAC 392-144-103.
- Satisfactorily complete a school bus driver training course administered by an authorized school bus driver instructor.
- Meet all applicable continuing school bus driver requirements in WAC 392-144-102.
Every authorized school bus driver must continue to meet the following requirements:
- Have a valid driver's license or commercial driver's license, as required by law, issued by the state department of licensing.
- Satisfactorily complete the annual school bus driver in-service training course.
- Maintain current and valid training in a first-aid course accepted by the local school district.
- Submit annually to the school district a disclosure of all crimes against children or other persons and all civil adjudications in a dependency action or in a domestic relation action and all disciplinary board final decisions of sexual abuse or exploitation or physical abuse as required by RCW 43.834(2) and disclosure of all convictions which may be grounds for denial, suspension, or revocation of authorization under WAC 392-144-103.
Every authorized school bus driver must continue to meet the following physical requirements:
- Is physically able to maneuver and control a school bus under all driving conditions.
- Is physically able to use all controls and equipment found on state minimum specified school buses.
- Is physically able to perform daily routine school bus vehicle safety inspections.
- Has sufficient strength and agility to move about in a school bus as required to provide assistance to students in evacuating the bus. The driver must be able to move from a seated position in a sixty-five passenger school bus, or the largest school bus the driver will be operating, to the emergency door, open the emergency door, and exit the bus through the emergency door, all within twenty-five seconds. A school district may develop and implement an alternative assessment of physical strength and agility. The alternate assessment must be submitted by the school district superintendent for review and approval by the superintendent.
- Provide a copy of a current and valid medical examiner's certificate to their employer.
