LEAD DIESEL MECHANIC

Transportation Department

8 hours/260 days per year.

 

M-F 8:00AM 4:30PM 

Shift time is subject to building needs. 

 

DIRECT SUPERVISOR: Transportation Director, Assistant Transportation Director or Designee

 

GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

The Lead Mechanic consists of proficiently executing journeyman-level tasks involving the diagnosis, repair, servicing, and upkeep of school buses, district vehicles, contracted vehicles, and other vehicles within the CWRTC's purview but also coordinating the day-to-day operations of the shop.

 

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  1. Lead a team of mechanics, delegating tasks, providing guidance, and ensuring the completion of work in a timely and efficient manner.
  2. Diagnose, and address mechanical, electrical, and engine-related issues in buses and other vehicles, utilizing appropriate software and providing mentorship to other mechanics.
  3. Conduct major repairs and replacements on engines, transmissions, brakes, and other vital components, overseeing and assisting other mechanics as needed.
  4. Collaborate with transportation staff to ensure timely availability of vehicles, coordinate maintenance schedules, and provide expertise on mechanical issues.
  5. Respond to roadside emergencies, providing leadership and technical expertise to resolve issues promptly and efficiently.
  6. Perform routine maintenance tasks and safety inspections, including oil changes, lubrication, tire changes, brake adjustments, and repairs to vehicle components, while overseeing and ensuring the quality and timeliness of the work of other mechanics.
  7. Order and maintain appropriate parts, materials, and supplies required for proper maintenance of buses and related equipment and shop facilities.
  8. Report any concerns or suggested modifications to vehicle specifications that improve safety, durability, maintenance, or efficiency to the Director of Transportation.
  9. Maintain cleanliness and security of facilities, equipment, and tools, ensuring a safe and organized work environment for all staff members.
  10. Participate in all designated training, safety, and in-service meetings, and provide guidance and support to other mechanics in implementing best practices.
  11. Take ownership of tasks and their results, demonstrating accountability and responsibility in all aspects of the role.
  12. Collaborate effectively with fellow staff members, fostering positive and respectful interactions, and promoting a cohesive team environment.
  13. Regularly check and respond to district emails.
  14. Demonstrate exceptional attendance and punctuality.
  15. Drive route buses as needed, demonstrating proficiency and adherence to all safety protocols and regulations.
  16. Performs other duties as required. 

  

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

  1. High School Diploma or GED.
  2. Seven years experience in the vehicle maintenance profession. Vocational training may be substituted for experience on a year-for-year basis.  ASE certifications are a plus.
  3. Possess, or be able to obtain, within 30 days a valid commercial driver’s license, Class B minimum, with required endorsements. Must have or be able to obtain, a Washington State School Bus Authorization, within 30 days of hire.  
  4. This position requires a CDL and is considered a safety-sensitive position, you will be under the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety requirements for drug and alcohol testing. This includes tests with favorable results for pre-employment, random, reasonable suspicion, and post-incident.
  5. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, supervisors, vendors, and drivers, while also providing guidance and support to other mechanics.
  6. Strong communication skills suitable for interaction with staff, students, the public and delegating tasks effectively.
  7. Proven ability to handle pressure, prioritize tasks, and delegate responsibilities effectively.
  8. Good physical condition, capable of lifting 50lbs and overseeing physically demanding tasks.
  9. Must have excellent attendance.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. ASE School Bus certification or ability to obtain.
  2. Full-time experience as a mechanic in a school bus maintenance facility.
  3. Knowledge of safety standards, laws, codes, rules, and regulations related to school buses and other types of school district vehicles.
  4. Proficiency in computer skills and knowledge for data input and retrieval, and ability to guide others in utilizing relevant software.
  5. Extensive experience in using diagnostic software to troubleshoot and repair vehicles and ability to train and support other mechanics in this area.
  6. Possess a set of auto mechanic hand tools and storage cabinet.
